This website is under construction (November 2013) so there is not a great deal to see so far (unless you are related to Alec Attwood Leather!) but new information is being added every week. If you have any interest in the surname Leather, please use the contact button below to get in touch.

The Leather Family History Society was formed in 1991 by a small number of enthusiastic researchers - many who turned out to be fairly closely related! The name Leather originated from the Cheshire/Lancashire border (probably from near Winwick) and, as a family, we are still mainly found in Lancashire, Cheshire and Yorkshire, with other centres in London and Birmingham. The name Leather does not relate to people who worked in the Leather industry; they were called names such as Tanner, Shoemaker, Currier, Dyer and Saddler.

The Society is a member of the Guild of One-Name Studies and of the Federation of Family History Societies.

The Society holds a number of family trees, photographs and other family artefacts, collects data from all possible sources, publishes a quarterly journal (Leather Lines), and holds an annual general meeting in a location with a Leather connection. We are happy to answer questions from members and non-members alike, and try to place people within one of our family trees.

The photograph is of George Leather Junior (1786-1870) of Leeds, Civil Engineer
